On a balmy evening in mid-September a group of Society members congregated in Parliament Square for a Very Special Event – a guided tour of not only the highest courts in the land (which are open at other times to the general public) but also of the private library of their lordships and a peek at an ancient tapestry and other secrets. Very ably conducted by the head of public relations, we were treated to an extremely well-informed account of the history and current operations of the courts and of those who work there. Whether or not we should be pleased at this we don’t know, but it transpires that all 12 of the Judges of the Supreme Court are from either Oxford or Cambridge – and we rather suspect that we have the majority! Being allowed into those areas of the Middlesex Guildhall was a rare privilege, and we were most grateful to our Secretary, Alastair Gourlay, and Eva Goetz, a member of the Society, for arranging it. Around 10 of us subsequently dined with gusto at the Quirinale restaurant nearby and left at about 10.30pm, having had an extremely enjoyable evening.
