Society member Lester Hillman led two groups on a whirlwind walk, taking in some surprising highlights of the City of London. As with all of Lester’s previous Society walks, his remarkable encyclopaedic knowledge of the area and plethora of anecdotes kept us spellbound. We climbed aboard the City’s ‘Stealth Bomber’, explored Milk and Honey Streets (the birthplaces of John Milton and Mrs Beeton), Guildhall and the Yard in front where London’s Roman amphitheatre once stood. After the second walk we enjoyed an extended tour, crossing Southwark Bridge, resplendent in a shade of turquoise rather reminiscent of the modern Cambridge “light blue”. We then dined the night away at a fine Turkish restaurant. As always we’re very grateful for Lester’s support for our Society, and by popular acclaim we will be keen for him to lead us on new adventures in the future.
