Our Mayfair Reception in the very impressive Kallos Gallery on 12th November went extremely well. Seventy of us gathered for an extended three-hour period where champagne and canapés were served throughout – and in what better way could you hope to spend a November evening at the colossal price of £10 per head? For Guests of Members it was £2 more, but we think they got a rather good deal also! The additional ingredients made it even more worthwhile though: the stunning Ancient Greek artefacts, all on display and all discussed informally with Dr Glenn Lacki who runs the Gallery on behalf of Baron Thyssen, proved to be fascinating. While some of the larger items had recently been sold for eye-watering amounts, we were able to admire some exquisite jewellery and delicate vases – so much so that it was with difficulty that we stopped our members actually touching them. However Dr Lacki did allow us to handle extremely valuable ancient gold coins, and for many of us that was a very special experience: they might, perhaps, have been in the hands of Pericles or Alexander himself. All in all, a major, classical success.
