Every year we work with the University to provide a Freshers’ Party for students from London schools about to go up to Cambridge in a couple of weeks’ time. This is one of the ‘Welcome to Cambridge’ events held all over the world, but ours is the biggest (and, we like to think, the best). This year some 150 excited, nervous, noisy and extremely polite young people congregated in our Central London venue for an evening of meeting each other, hearing a little about the alumni Societies and – critically – learning from the real experts, our student volunteers who were with us as freshers last year and who came back to advise them on Life As It Really Is in Cambridge these days. From the University we also had members of the Alumni Relations office, the Director of Admissions, the President of the Students Union and some of his Officers. All in all the freshers had an experience second to none, and we had difficulty getting them out at curfew time. A very successful evening.
