Historic Maritime Greenwich is a beautiful riverside spot, well worth exploring on a sunny afternoon. Blue Badge Tourist Guide Caroline Piper led a Cambridge Society group on a stroll through Christopher Wren’s divine Old Royal Naval College grounds, with views in one direction of the river and Canary Wharf, and in the other of Greenwich park and the Royal Observatory. A highlight was visiting the architect Inigo Jones’ masterpiece, the Queen’s House. It is an architectural marvel, with its harmonious Renaissance Italian proportions, stunning Great Hall and elegant Tulip staircase (where the group are pictured). This is the first geometric self-supporting spiral staircase in the country, an example of mathematical perfection and very beautiful. The Queen’s House is also a treasure trove of art, with the Armada portrait of Elizabeth I the jewel in the crown! A visit is strongly recommended.
