The Society returned once again to the spiritual home of cricket for our annual Lord’s Suite Party, one of the most eagerly anticipated dates in the CamSocLon calendar. This year’s event proved particularly memorable as ongoing redevelopment works at Lord’s meant that for the first time we were the only group occupying the Tavern Stand. With our sold-out private suite overlooking the Main Ground, it gave the day an unusually intimate and exclusive atmosphere, allowing members and guests to enjoy uninterrupted views across one of sport’s most iconic settings.
The suite provided the perfect base for the day’s Varsity T20 double-header between Cambridge and Oxford. While the weather could not quite decide what season it wished to be – chilly at times, though bright in spells – the absence of rain was warmly welcomed after some of the disruptions of previous years. Lord’s itself was operating on a reduced basis because of the construction works, with only a single burger van and ice cream stand open for lunch, prompting those members who continued the well-established tradition of bringing picnics and gathering in the Coronation Gardens between matches to feel a little smug!
The women’s match provided the perfect start to the afternoon from a Cambridge perspective. In a closely fought contest, Oxford posted 51 all out before Cambridge successfully chased the target, reaching 52/6 to secure an excellent four-wicket victory. The win brought plenty of energy and optimism to the suite – we were in particularly fine voice as the chase drew towards its conclusion.
The men’s match proved equally competitive, though this time the result went Oxford’s way. Oxford posted a challenging 137/7 from their 20 overs and despite a determined Cambridge response the Light Blues ultimately fell 13 runs short on 124/9. The match remained alive deep into the closing overs and provided an entertaining conclusion to an excellent day’s cricket.
Despite the cooler temperatures and the unusual atmosphere created by the works around the ground, the occasion captured everything that makes the Lord’s Varsity fixture so special: good company, spirited rivalry, memorable cricket, and the pleasure of spending a spring day together in one of the game’s most historic venues.
