A Wednesday evening in July saw the Society back at our favourite London art gallery, the Coningsby Gallery in Fitzrovia, for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic struck. It was wonderful to be in such a delightful space, meeting old friends and new, mingling and chatting, and soaking up a bit of art at the same time!
It was a warm evening, the day after the heatwave, but the gallery was full of friendly, chatting people, the wine flowed generously and the nibbles were delicious (and generously catered!). Various members of the Cambridge Society of London Committee were there and delighted to meet so many new faces; you might remember Dave Hughes (the responsible one), Shaleem Jacob (barman extraordinaire), Caroline (the one with the fan) and Sarah (the cooler, in both senses, woman).
The gallery provided an informal space to start up a conversation with new friends, and just to moan “how is it so hot?”. For those slightly more refined, the exhibition on “The Urban Sublime” was fascinating, with some wonderful paintings, including of London scenes. My favourite subject matter was definitely the urban fox – who found his way into a couple of the atmospheric street scene paintings.
As always our thanks go to Andrew Coningsby for allowing us to use his wonderful gallery and I hope to see you all at a similar event soon!
