On Sunday, 13th April 2025, the Cambridge Society of London hosted its annual Boat Race gathering at the Duke’s Head in Putney, continuing a cherished tradition that began in 2012. Members and their guests convened in the private Wolsey Room of this Grade II listed riverside pub to enjoy a day of camaraderie, dining, and thrilling rowing competition.
The event commenced mid-morning with apéritifs, allowing attendees to mingle before sitting down to a three-course lunch at noon. As the 79th Women’s Boat Race approached, guests moved to the windows to witness the crews align at the starting line, cheering as the race began. After the boats passed out of view, the group turned to a large television screen to follow the remainder of the race.
The day’s races unfolded with remarkable success for Cambridge. The women’s team secured their eighth consecutive victory, winning by 2.5 lengths in 19 minutes and 25 seconds. The men’s team followed suit, triumphing by 5.5 lengths with a time of 16 minutes and 56 seconds, marking their third consecutive win. Cambridge also claimed victories in both reserve races: Blondie defeated Osiris in the women’s reserves, and Goldie overcame Isis in the men’s reserves.
Following the races, keen members and guests continued with refreshments and spirited conversation for a good hour or two before, in some cases, moving on to explore the festivities taking place in lower floors of the pub. The convivial atmosphere, coupled with Cambridge’s clean sweep, made for a memorable celebration of this storied rivalry.
As always, the Cambridge Society of London provided an exceptional setting for alumni and friends to come together in support of their university, blending tradition, sport, and fellowship in a quintessentially Cambridge manner.
