Once again the Society gathered at the spiritual home of cricket for what has become a regular fixture in CamSocLon’s calendar. From the lofty perch of our private suite in the Tavern Stand, we spent a glorious spring’s day overlooking the hallowed turf of Lord’s. With both indoor and balcony seating, free-flowing drinks, and the kind of warm hospitality that makes this event such a treasured highlight of our year, spirits were high from the outset.
This year’s Varsity T20 double-header brought both women’s and men’s teams into action on the Main Ground – coloured kits, pink ball, and skies of the deepest blue. As ever, guests were free to roam the ground, browse the shops, or picnic under the trees in the Coronation Garden between the matches. The day began with the women’s match, where the Cambridge side faced a powerful Oxford team. Despite a spirited effort, they found themselves thoroughly outplayed in a one-sided contest. But any early disappointment was swiftly swept away by the men’s performance, which followed with emphatic dominance.
Choosing to bowl first proved an inspired decision, as Cambridge’s spinners dismantled a faltering Oxford batting order. A flurry of early wickets saw Oxford struggle to recover, posting just 106 by the end of their 20 overs. Freddie Kottler then took centre stage in the reply, blasting a sparkling half-century off just 31 balls, including a pair of soaring sixes that had the balcony crowd on their feet. The chase was wrapped up with 29 balls to spare – a clinical and commanding victory that lifted the mood and rounded off the afternoon in fine style.
With the sun shining and cheers echoing from our suite, the event once again delivered on all fronts: great cricket, excellent company and the simple joy of a spring day at Lord’s. With this historic fixture still secured for a few years to come, we look forward to more of these memorable occasions.
