Few of the two hundred or so then-school-leavers will have forgotten their three hours of raucous friend-making at our Society’s Freshers’ Evening. Were they nervous? Of course they were! That lasted for about twenty seconds though, after which mass joy and anticipation took over. We interrupted them briefly to congratulate them, to tell them about the Cambridge Societies around the world and especially our London one – the best, naturally – and we also dropped a gentle hint that they shouldn’t forget to get a degree. And that was it: the rest was all noise, laughter, contact-swapping, and targeting of those very kind soon-to-be-second-years (the real experts) who had volunteered to come back to tell them about College life “like it is”. Everyone left by 9:30pm happy in the knowledge that they were going to the best University in the world – and what better way can the London Society encourage future allegiance? Our thanks go to those student volunteers and to Claire, Anna and Jan from CARO who did the background admin with the Colleges and helped us on the evening. The Freshers’ Party is a firm fixture in our Society Calendar, and we do this willingly as a service to the University.
