Oxford won the toss and chose to bat. Over the next few hours we watched them achieve a score of 202 with particular credit due to some of their lower-middle order batsmen. We then headed off to the Coronation Garden for our picnics with reasonable confidence about our prospects for the afternoon. As we enjoyed some premature champagne and some delightful home-made delicacies, many of us staggered back to our suite a little late – hearing a roar from the crowd on the way. Upon decamping in our box, we discovered that we had lost our first wicket for only one run. Our Light Blue men struggled a little with the strength of the Oxford bowling and Dark Blue wicket-keeper Westaway took a total of 7 catches from behind the stumps. Westaway also had the accolade of being the only man to score a half-century on the day – so a true man of the match. We were bowled out for 159 in 34.2 overs. Many of us then wandered over to the Nursery Ground to see us fare no better in the women’s match as we finished 105 runs short. Still, the sunshine and joviality of the day left many of us in strong spirits as we headed off to another venue nearby. Next year the result will – naturally – be entirely different, so stay tuned for our 2016 Revenge!
