About Us
Formed over 50 years ago
CamSocLon focuses on fostering a community for Cambridge alumni in the capital by organising special events for members in the areas of culture, history, world affairs, sport, socialising and focused networking, as well as by providing an annual party for Freshers. Unique among the University’s alumni groups in London, CamSocLon is for all of us, i.e. you – no matter what vintage, background, profession, career or life path, interests or hobbies you have.
Events have included:
Varsity Cricket at Lord’s: private suites in the Tavern Stand to see the Varsity Matches.
The Networking Series: special targeted networking events at prestigious locations throughout the capital, currently hosted by Clifford Chance LLP.
A tailored tour of the magnificently renovated St Pancras Station and its sumptuous Renaissance Hotel, led by our Cambridge expert, Lester Hillman.
The largest Cambridge Freshers’ Party in the world, for more than 200 London freshers each year, a short time before they go up.
Singles Evening: held jointly with an Oxford society at the British Film Institute bar.
Private tours throughout London’s premier Museums and Galleries, currently hosted by Society Member and Blue Badge Guide, Caroline Piper.
The Downing Street Lectures: a German History Professor, Peter Alter, talking about the Germans’ view of Churchill, in the old Privy Council Courtroom in No 9.
The Art Safari: a private tour of art galleries in the East End, with talks and hosted receptions.
Lambeth Palace: a private tour by one of our members, an accredited guide.
The Trafalgar Day Lecture – 200 years later, delivered by Lord Walpole.
Billingsgate and the Fishmongers Hall: early summer morning guided tour of the fish market followed by breakfast in the magnificent Fishmongers Hall on the Thames.
The Society provides
a great opportunity to make new friends and contacts with other Cambridge alumni in London, whilst enjoying interesting and varied social events. In addition, through exclusive forums, members can keep in touch, ask questions and support each other year-round.
Our CamSocLon committee
always needs your ideas and practical help. London has a huge amount to offer but we cannot stay distinctive if we just offer events that the general public can easily do also. It’s that special venue, special event, special person, or special theme, that brings Cambridge people together to meet others and to enjoy special times. Have a look at our Events and News pages to see what we mean.
The committee
The University has over 460 alumni societies around the world, all not-for-profit and all run by unremunerated volunteers.
Our Society’s activities are organised by the Committee, all of whose alumni-members are unpaid volunteers elected by Society members attending a General Meeting. The Committee welcomes ideas and suggestions, and members are also encouraged to offer themselves for election to the Committee itself. It is expected that each member will assume overall management of at least one event per year, supported by all other committee members.
Our Constitution is available to members upon request.
