On Friday 21st August, members of the Cambridge Society of London ventured out for our first real-life event since March, a guided tour exploring the river Thames led by Blue Badge Guide Caroline Piper.  It was the perfect summer’s evening, with the light twinkling on the water.  The river was quiet, with few commuters or tourists, so we sat back on our comfy Thames Clippers boat and watched the scenery drift by.  Particularly invigorating was to get out into the salty, blustery fresh air at Royal Wharf and take a short stroll to the impressive Thames Barrier, keeping London safe from flooding since 1982.  The tide was low with seagulls playing on the muddy Thames beaches, it was almost like a mini trip to the seaside.  For any Londoners in need of an urgent change of scenery after lockdown, we recommend it highly!
