Most generously our Society Member and expert guide Lester Hillman took two groups of us, at 11.am and at 6.30 pm, through the main streets, back streets, secluded alleys and hidden corners of the Angel, Clerkenwell and Smithfield, informing and entertaining us with a plethora of references, stories, anecdotes and rumours from the days of Wat Tyler and the Peasants Revolt right through today’s political shenanigans, taking in Henry VIII, the Spa Field Riots, the murder of Prime Minister Spencer Perceval, the murder of Abraham Lincoln, Karl Marx, two underground lines plus a river and a canal all on top of each other, and large number of other colourful accounts from our most colourful history. Lester has a huge fund of knowledge and succeeds in linking it in the most imaginative and intriguing way. These walks, like those he has done for us in the past, were greatly enjoyed by all. We look forward to the next ones!
