The Society’s festive Pall Mall Party the week before Christmas was both a jolly and elegant occasion. Members, potential members and their partners gathered in the magnificent chandeliered Smoking Room of the Oxford and Cambridge Club, all fully compliant, of course, with the Club’s dress code, their ‘no smoking in the Smoking Room’ policy and other rules! We enjoyed a relaxed evening of drinks and ‘Gourmet Nibbles’ with a brief break in the middle when our Club host for the evening and the Society’s Chairman, David Peace, spoke. He described the Society’s purpose and reviewed our excellent year (walking the path of the Fleet River, cheering on our crew at the Boat Race from our private room, our Oxbridge singles party at the British Film Institute, our private suite at Lord’s and entertaining two hundred Cambridge freshers), then looked ahead to 2014. As a member of the Oxford and Cambridge Club, David Peace also tirelessly took full responsibility for five thorough tours of the splendid Club from top to bottom. The experience certainly seemed to dazzle some into seriously considering membership of the Club or at least calculating when they might be able to afford the prospect. All in all, we spent a most agreeable evening reminiscing over old times at Cambridge and musing over what’s happened since, while making new friends in refined surroundings.
